Trains Horns: Two-Tone Diesel-Train Horn Sound Effect Circuit
Topics: Sound Circuits / Sound Effects
This is a train sound effect electronic circuit that emits a hi-low dual train effect sound. Click the link at the bottom to hear the circuit in operation prior to building!
The circuit uses a 556 microchip, which is basically 2 x 555 IC timers in once case. If you don't have the 556, the equivalent circuit using 555 timers is also given, for your convenience!
The operation of the circuit is explained in good detail, and there is also some guidance on making an appropriate strip-board (veroboard/perfboard) circuit board so that you can solder it all together. Here is the component list that you have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into:
Parts List for 556 version:- R1 = 330K
- R2 = 390K
- R3,R6 = 68K
- R4,R5 = 33K
- S1 = on/off switch
- ----
- C1 = 4.7uF/16volt, electrolytic
- C2 = 2.2uF/16volt, electrolytic
- C3 = 100nF, ceramic
- C4 = 100uF/16volt, electrolytic
- C5 = 47nF, ceramic
- ----
- Re = Reed Relay (glass tube)
- LS = 8 Ohm, 0.25-2watt. Others may work too.
- IC1 = NE556 (or use two 555's)
- D1,D2 = 1N4001

Discussion of making the horn be trigger while the train is on the tracks is also included, and the circuit can be powered from a 9V DC battery power source.

Briliant bit of kit just made it and very impressed,
can you tell me is it possible to change the tone from high to low
instead of low to high
many thanks
